INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

—Albert Einstein

At Recovery Inside Out, our main focus is you. Individual therapy is a one-on-one in-depth, private therapy session where we focus on you, your needs, what brought you here (ie: the issues you want to work on) and provide you with the best plan of action to achieving a satisfying and fulfilled life. We specialize in treating concerns with substance use, the effects of substance use with loved ones, challenges involving recovery, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues and parenting challenges.

Being diagnosed with a mental health problem is not a requirement to receive therapy. People seek therapy for all sorts of reasons--- stress, relationship issues, parenting challenges, depression or anxiety to name a few. There is no shame in seeking mental help— we believe you are COURAGEOUS for doing so— self-care is always a winner in our book.

  • Your initial individual therapy session will last for 60 minutes and subsequent therapy sessions will be 50 minutes. During this time, your trained, licensed therapist will listen attentively to you and start the process of “getting to know you”, gather information about what sparked you to seek counseling and based on your answers, make notations on how we can be most effective in your treatment. The frequency of appointments will depend on your specific needs. Regular attendance is recommended for the fastest path to recovery.

  • At Recovery Inside Out, we provide a soothing environment, so you will feel safe, acknowledged, supported and validated to share your innermost feelings and experiences with us. During your therapy session, you will be treated with respect, understanding, empathy, care and compassion. We will encourage you to work through issues at your own pace. We will guide you every step of the way. We will help you figure out the best next steps to creating a life worth living.

  • At Recovery Inside Out, we specialize in the treatment of adolescents and young adults. Many of our clients are parents who are in your exact situation. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with panic, desperation and fear of what will happen if your child does not get the appropriate “therapeutic help” that’s needed, let us reassure you that we understand how you feel and we are here to help.

No matter what the young person is seeking counseling for, our therapists are very sensitive to the fact that he/she may not be entirely ready to be “open and honest” with us--- And that’s OK. We will meet the young person wherever they are in the process. Our therapists are highly sensitive to the needs of young people. It’s extremely important to us that we are able to cultivate trust and hope between the young person and therapist--- creating a solid connection is absolutely crucial to the success of the patient’s recovery.

  • Unfortunately, many young people have seen countless therapists only to be met with utter disappointment, resulting in a universal mistrust of mental health professionals and a lack of faith in the overall therapeutic process. Therapy has left a “bad taste” in their mouth and we get it.

At Recovery Inside Out, you can feel confident that you’re receiving high-quality, specialized care. Our team of professional, licensed therapists are highly experienced and thoroughly trained in specialty fields such as substance use and therapy for young people. At Recovery Inside out, we strive to offer the young person a place of understanding where no judgment is passed and provide them with life tools to help them build self-confidence, self-acceptance and, if applicable, achieving/maintaining sobriety.

  • The process begins with one of our therapists meeting with the parents and/or caregivers for a 1.5-hour session. The goal during this session is to understand the family system, the dynamics between family members, the parent(s) and the young person from another’s perspective. It’s also an opportunity for your therapist to learn detailed information about past experiences and the motivations/reasons that prompted you to seek therapy. Our therapist will also discuss how we share information with your family and the expectation of the therapist in regards to treatment and communication.

The next session is for the young person only and lasts for 60 minutes. During this session, the goal is to understand the young person, their likes, their struggles, their experience in the family and most importantly, what he/she wants to achieve from their therapeutic process. Our therapist will also discuss how we share information with the family and the role of the therapist in this process. Subsequent therapy sessions will be 50 minutes.

    DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?

Stress, depression and anxiety can manifest in your life in different ways and the “way it shows up” in your life is different for everyone. Stress can seriously affect your body and mind. Because stress and anxiety share many of the same characteristics, it can be hard to tell the difference between them. It’s important to know when it’s time to seek professional help. Our professional team of qualified, licensed therapists will guide you through the therapeutic process. We will carefully customize your treatment plan to maximize successful results in your recovery.

IT’S A THINKING PROBLEM. NOT A “YOU” PROBLEM.

Have you ever tried to figure out a problem in your life and no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to find a solution? Relate much? We get it and it’s not a “YOU” problem, it’s a thinking problem. It’s a common dilemma--- the good news is that we have a solution to your “thinking problem”. Often, the answer may be staring you straight in the face, but you’re too “close” (to the situation) to it to see it. At Recovery Inside Out, we help give you a fresh perspective on the way you handle “life’s problems”.

Sometimes it’s not possible to sort through a tough problem on your own. Sometimes you need professional help--- and that’s OK. There is no shame in getting help. Seeking help is COURAGEOUS and HEALTHY. That’s why we’re here--- to give you solutions to your problems.

FAMILY therapy

Families often develop their own specific “coping mechanisms” in response to dealing with each other and events relating to the family as a whole. The dynamics between each family member are different for each family because there are so many different variables that affect the family household. When any part of the family system is in trouble or not functioning in a healthy way, the whole system suffers. There are many factors in life that may cause the family to suffer including, death, divorce, moving, substance abuse, sibling conflict, parental conflict and any other life events that induce excessive stress or other strong emotions.

At Recovery Inside Out, our licensed therapists will work with each family member to create balance and peace within the family system. We specialize in assisting families who have been impacted by the young person’s substance use and/or mental health concerns. Our licensed therapists are highly skilled in working with families in regards to rebuilding trust and understanding how the family can continue and promote change for the young person afflicted.

  • Family sessions typically last 60 minutes. The frequency of appointments will depend on your family’s need for counseling. To achieve the best results, it is important for all who are involved in the process to attend and participate in the process.

  • At Recovery Inside Out, our goals for family therapy are to help rebuild trust and improve communication between the family members. We provide an emotionally safe, private environment during your sessions, so you will feel at ease sharing your feelings and experiences.

Some of the skills you will learn and topics discussed during family therapy are as follows:

    • Setting clear goals that the family wants to accomplish

    • Learn how to set healthy boundaries between you and your family members

    • How to have accountability versus not playing the victim

    • How to support the young person in recovery versus enabling them

    • Identifying negative thought patterns and learning how to shift your intrusive mindset to a more encouraging, healthier way of thinking

    • Rebuilding trust between family members

    • How to create a safe, healthy family environment in order to improve emotional and mental stability

    • Exercises to improve self-worth and self-love

    • Identifying and discussing triggers, conflicts and issues within the family

    • Recognizing negative behavior patterns and finding solutions to help the family relate to each other in a healthier, more positive way

  • Anyone important to the family member’s recovery is welcome to attend the family therapy sessions. “Family members” who participate in the session are not limited to parents, siblings, spouses and extended family--- if you wish to have a close friend attend a family therapy session that is perfectly acceptable.

  • Change is not always easy--- for anyone. We will help you take those “action steps” to attain healthier family dynamics. Rebuilding takes time, but it is worth all the hard work and effort. Our therapists will customize a family therapy program that best fits your family’s needs.

PARENT CONSULTATION

Parents have the hardest, most demanding jobs. Our therapists understand this to the core and we are 100% empathetic to your situation--- especially when your child is suffering from addiction and/or mental health concerns. We created the Parent Consultation service to provide answers TO PARENTS as quickly as possible in regards to helping their child and to assist parents in understanding the next best steps for the young person of concern and for themselves.

At Recovery Inside Out, we understand your exhaustion and frustration when you’re not sure what to do to get your child help. Our therapists are here to provide the support you need and guide you every step of the way.

A Parent Consultation is not a traditional family session--- often times the young person is unable (or unwilling) to come in for an evaluation. If you need answers quickly and you feel like you’re running out of time with your child, the Parent Consultation service is a good option for you.

    1. You just found out how out-of-control your child is and you are scared he/she might die. You are not sure how to approach your child and you feel like time is running out.

    2. Your child has been to countless therapists and treatment programs and nothing seems to work. You are beginning to doubt therapy works at all.

    3. Your child is financially dependent on you--- whether that means he/she is living in the same household or you pay for his/her living expenses.

  • A Parent Consultation session lasts 1.5-hours. To achieve the best results, it is important for both parents or caregivers to attend and participate in the process.

  • At Recovery Inside Out, we provide a pleasant, private and peaceful environment. It’s important to us that you feel safe and comfortable during your session. Assisting in the next best steps for the young person might include: therapists, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), inpatient program, residential treatment, interventionists and/or parent support. After the Parent Consultation session has concluded, we can discuss the option of continuing our services and introducing Family Counseling. The main goal for the Family Counseling sessions will focus on how to motivate the young person to get the help he/she needs.

  • At Recovery Inside Out, we specialize in the treatment of young people. We understand how scared you feel when you discover your child is suffering from addiction and/or mental health concerns. We make it our mission to provide the answers you need quickly and efficiently, so we can assist your child the best way possible.

substance use EVALUATION

SUBSTANCE USE / MENTAL HEALTH EVALUATION

An evaluation is conducted, in order to better understand the needs of each individual.  All who are involved in the process are encouraged to attend a minimum 2-hour session. (i.e., parents and young person).  The process of the evaluation includes, initially meeting with everyone who will be involved with the process, meeting with the young person privately, meeting with the parents and/or guardians privately, and then meeting with everyone to discuss recommendations and/or results of the evaluation.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING AN EVALUATION?

The purpose of the evaluation is to collect information about the person of concern and family to assist with recommending the appropriate level of care.  Participation from the whole family is encouraged to gain insight and understanding from each person’s perspective. If the person of concern is under the age of 18 years of age, parental and/or guardian involvement is required.

A comprehensive approach is taken in order to conduct the evaluation; therefore, providing paperwork for previous psycho-education evaluations, psychological evaluations, discharge plans from previous treatment placement, any medical evaluations, and/or any other pertinent information is encouraged. When we are provided with ample supporting medical documentation, this allows our therapists to understand the person as a whole and to determine the appropriate level of care.

During the evaluation, collaboration with other providers (both medical and/or mental health) is critical for this process and it is included in the fee for this service.

CASE MANAGEMENT / CONSULTING

If you have a loved one that has been admitted into an Intensive Outpatient program, often you will have many questions about the process. During such situations, we offer a Case Management Consulting Service whereas we become the advocate/consultant for both the patient and parent. We will ease your mind and make sure your loved one (patient) is receiving proper care and specialized treatment.

  • • We serve as guide throughout the process.

    • This is a prepaid service for a term of 6 months.

    • We will follow the patient for 6 months.

Is utilized for families or loved ones with substance use or mental health concerns who need more than individual counseling or who need additional support during, through out, or after seeking treatment. It’s a comprehensive approach to allow families and/or individuals support at all points of the recovery process.

The Case Management /Consulting Service is more than helping with treatment oversight— it’s really a service that provides a long-term advocate for the individual and family.

Recovery Inside Out’s Case Management /Consulting Service ensures everyone is getting the care they deserve and are paying for.

    1. Treatment planning.

    2. Coordinating and ongoing monitoring with all providers in the treatment process, as well as referrals to providers through out the recovery process for both the individual and the family.

    3. Acting as an advocate for the individual and assisting with planning next steps.

SPECIALIZED SERVICES

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

This can include substance use, substance abuse, substance misuse, and/or addiction. Our licensed therapists work with both adolescents, young adults and adults. At Recovery Inside Out, we specialize in the treatment for adolescents and young adults— it’s what our founder and owner, Allison Basham is known for. Allison has been nicknamed “The Teenage Whisperer” because of her innate ability to connect with adolescents and young adults.

  • With substance use counseling it’s really important for us to meet the person where they are. We draw from the stages of change, motivational interviewing, 12-step, abstinence based, harm reduction approaches. Our job is to meet the person where they are and motivate them to change. Our therapists really go the extra mile to help them figure out their goals. Sometimes their goals are focused on getting privileges back and other times it’s using substances less. It really doesn’t matter if they see their substance use/drinking as problematic, we can start anywhere.

  • Help begins with you, our client. You have to be the one who wants it. We support our clients 100% and we want them to succeed.

We work with a lot of young people getting out of treatment or who are in early recovery. Our goal with our clients is to support them in their recovery process. We like to consider ourselves an addition to a sponsor--- similar to that of a spiritual advisor. We will incorporate the 12 steps or even the principles into the counseling process.

Our hope is to enhance the recovery process for them and allow them to process issues more deeply than they are able to with a sponsor or at a meeting. We can really begin to focus on trauma or other mental health concerns.

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT)

As a highly skilled Dialectical Behavioral Therapist (DBT), Allison Basham received her certified training at Behavioral Tech in 2013. To give you a background in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), in the late 80s, Marsha Linehan developed this model to help women who were diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder to create a life worth living. Since that time, DBT has become the “golden standard of care” to treat BPD. DBT is also used to work with Substance Use Disorder, depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders and other mental health concerns.

Allison participates in a bi-weekly DBT consultation team and provides individual adherent DBT. Allison also utilizes diary cards and behavior chains in individual DBT to help her patients achieve optimal results and success in their recovery.

  • SE SESSION FORMAT:

SE sessions are done seated in a chair or couch depending on your preference. You will be asked to share an impression of the sensations that you feel in your body, such as tightness, heat, shakiness, expansion, relaxations, etc. I will teach you ways to track, or follow, these sensations with your awareness and come to a place of rebalance.

    TOUCH:

SE is not a form of massage. I may offer you touch support for the following reasons: grounding, containment, support, mobilization, or awareness building. You will always be asked before being touched and have the right and my full support to decline. If you do not feel comfortable with touch, or if the session does not call for it, session work will not include touch.

If we are working online, I may offer “intentional touch”, which is a way of placing attention at different places in your body to bring awareness and to bring support to your own experience, even though I will not be physically touching your body.

  • DBT focuses on mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness.

Recovery Inside Out utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & Substance Use Disorders (SUD) which is a unique subset of DBT and implements specific skills to address substance use from a DBT approach.

SOMATIC EXPERIENCING®

Currently, Allison Basham is in her third and final year (2022) of a 3-year training program to become a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP). This training meets three times a year and Allison will have completed over 60 hours per year of education/training, along with 12 hours of her own personal SE sessions and 18 hours of case consultations. Since Allison has not completed the SE training as of yet, she is considered a Somatic Experiencing® Student in Training Level II.

  • The reason I decided to seek this training is because of my work with families who have been impacted by substance use and mental health. I found I was working with many parents who had been impacted by their child’s use or mental health in a way where they themselves were experiencing post-traumatic symptoms, such as intrusive thoughts, intense anxiety, fear, debilitating depression, nightmares, etc.

Talk therapy, attendance at family recovery support meetings and focusing on their overall health did not bring about lasting change. Sometimes these symptoms even interfered with their child’s recovery and other relationships. I knew this was a result of the traumatic impacts of loving someone with untreated substance use and or mental health.

I wanted to learn a way to resolve this conflict— so these parents could have their lives back— so they could experience recovery, too. I research all of the modes of trauma treatment and felt that SE was most in line with what I believe.

CERTIFIED PSYCHODRAMA HEALER

As a Certified Psychodrama Healer, Allison Basham implements this therapeutic approach in a group therapy environment versus during an individual session. Psychodrama is an experiential technique that allows an individual to work from the inside out.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A PSYCHODRAMA SESSION?

The most common forms of psychodrama are empty chairs or role-play. The psychodramas Allison conducts are more expansive in that they allow an individual to reenact a scenario in his/her life. The goal would be to allow the individual to release/express emotions and ultimately change old beliefs and ways of acting. This mode of therapy is also utilized in healing trauma.

EXPERIENCED, PROFESSIONAL, 200 HOURS OF CERTIFIED TRAINING

Allison’s completion of 1 year of training, including 200 hours of certified training/education, definitely qualifies her as a specialized and experienced professional therapist in this mode of therapy.
